2:1 So ließ er denn 70000 Lastträger und 80000 Steinhauer im Gebirge (Juda) und 3600 Aufseher über sie abzählen.

2:1 And he numbered out seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand to hew stones in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred to oversee them.

2:2 Dann schickte Salomo eine Gesandtschaft an den König Huram von Tyrus und ließ ihm sagen: »Wie du es bei meinem Vater David gehalten hast, indem du ihm Zedern sandtest, damit er sich einen Palast zu seinem Wohnsitz erbauen könnte, so halte es auch mit mir!

2:2 He sent also to Hiram king of Tyre, saying: As thou didst with David my father, and didst send him cedars, to build him a house, in which he dwelt:

2:3 Wisse wohl: ich bin im Begriff, dem Namen des HERRN, meines Gottes, ein Haus zu bauen und es ihm zu weihen, damit man wohlriechendes Räucherwerk vor ihm verbrennen und Schaubrote regelmäßig zurichten und Brandopfer an jedem Morgen und Abend, an den Sabbaten, sowie an den Neumonden und den (anderen) Festen des HERRN, unseres Gottes, darbringen kann, – das ist ja stehender Brauch in Israel.

2:3 So do with me that I may build a house to the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to burn incense before him, and to perfume with aromatical spices, and for the continual setting forth of bread, and for the holocausts, morning and evening, and on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and the solemnities of the Lord our God for ever, which are commanded for Israel.

2:4 Das Haus aber, das ich bauen will, muß groß sein; denn unser Gott ist größer als alle anderen Götter.

2:4 For the house which I desire to build, is great: for our God is great above all gods.

2:5 Freilich – wer vermöchte ihm ein Haus zu bauen, da doch der Himmel und aller Himmel Himmel ihn nicht fassen können? Und wer bin ich, daß ich ihm ein Haus bauen sollte? Es geschieht ja nur, um vor ihm (Opfer als) Räucherwerk zu verbrennen.

2:5 Who then can be able to build him a worthy house? if heaven, and the heavens of heavens cannot contain him: who am I that I should be able to build him a house? but to this end only, that incense may be burnt before him.

2:6 So sende mir denn nun einen Mann, der sich auf Arbeiten in Gold und Silber, in Kupfer und Eisen, in rotem Purpur, karmesinfarbigen Stoffen und blauem Purpur versteht und geschickt ist, Steine zu schneiden, im Verein mit den Künstlern, die mir in Juda und Jerusalem zur Verfügung stehen und die mein Vater David schon beschafft hat.

2:6 Send me therefore a skilful man, that knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, in purple, in scarlet and in blue, and that hath skill in engraving, with the artificers, which I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided.

2:7 Sende mir auch Zedernstämme, Zypressen und Sandelholz vom Libanon; denn ich weiß, daß deine Leute sich darauf verstehen, die Bäume auf dem Libanon zu fällen; dabei sollen dann meine Leute den deinen behilflich sein.

2:7 Send me also cedars, and fir trees, and pine trees from Libanus: for I know that thy servants are skilful in cutting timber in Libanus, and my servants shall be with thy servants,

2:8 Es muß mir aber Holz in Menge beschafft werden; denn das Haus, das ich bauen will, soll von ungewöhnlicher Größe sein.

2:8 To provide me timber in abundance. For the house which I desire to build, is to be exceeding great, and glorious.

2:9 Ich bin übrigens bereit, für deine Leute, die Holzhauer, welche die Bäume fällen, zum Unterhalt 20000 Kor Weizen, 20000 Kor Gerste, 20000 Bath Wein und 20000 Bath Öl zu liefern.«

2:9 And I will give thy servants the workmen that are to cut down the trees, for their food twenty thousand cores of wheat, and as many cores of barley, and twenty thousand measures of wine, and twenty thousand measures of oil.

2:10 Huram, der König von Tyrus, antwortete in einem Briefe, den er an Salomo sandte, folgendermaßen: »Weil der HERR sein Volk liebt, hat er dich zum König über sie gemacht.«

2:10 And Hiram king of Tyre sent a letter to Solomon, saying: Because the Lord hath loved his people, therefore he hath made thee king over them.

2:11 Dann fuhr Huram fort: »Gepriesen sei der HERR, der Gott Israels, der den Himmel und die Erde geschaffen hat, daß er dem König David einen weisen Sohn geschenkt hat, der so klug und einsichtsvoll ist, daß er dem HERRN einen Tempel und sich selbst einen Königspalast erbauen will!

2:11 And he added, saying: Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who hath given to king David a wise and knowing son, endued with understanding and prudence, to build a house to the Lord, and a palace for himself.

2:12 So sende ich dir denn einen kunstverständigen, einsichtsvollen Mann, nämlich Huram-Abi,

2:12 I therefore have sent thee my father Hiram, a wise and most skilful man,

2:13 den Sohn einer Danitin, der aber einen Tyrer zum Vater hat. Er versteht sich auf Arbeiten in Gold und Silber, in Kupfer und Eisen, in Steinen und Holz, in rotem und blauem Purpur, in Byssus und karmesinfarbigen Stoffen; er kann auch Schnitzarbeit jeder Art und alle Kunstarbeiten, die ihm übertragen werden, im Verein mit deinen Künstlern und den Künstlern meines Herrn David, deines Vaters, ausführen.

2:13 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, whose father was a Tyrian, who knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, and in marble, and in timber, in purple also, and violet, and silk and scarlet: and who knoweth to grave all sort of graving, and to devise ingeniously all that there may be need of in the work with thy artificers, and with the artificers of my lord David thy father.

2:14 So möge denn mein Herr den Weizen und die Gerste, das Öl und den Wein seinen Knechten senden, wie mein Herr es versprochen hat;

2:14 The wheat therefore, and the barley and the oil, and the wine, which thou, my lord, hast promised, send to thy servants.

2:15 wir aber wollen Bäume, soviele du überhaupt bedarfst, auf dem Libanon fällen und wollen sie dir als Flöße auf dem Meer nach Japho zuführen; du kannst sie dann von dort nach Jerusalem hinaufschaffen.«

2:15 And we will cut down as many trees out of Libanus, as thou shalt want, and will convey them in floats by sea to Joppe: and it will be thy part to bring them thence to Jerusalem.

2:16 Nun ließ Salomo alle Fremdlinge, die sich im Lande Israel befanden, zählen nach der (früheren) Zählung, die sein Vater David mit ihnen vorgenommen hatte; da fanden sich deren 153600.

2:16 And Solomon numbered all the proselytes in the land of Israel, after the numbering which David his father had made, and they were found a hundred and fifty-three thousand and six hundred.

2:17 Von diesen machte er 70000 zu Lastträgern, 80000 zu Steinhauern im Gebirge (Juda) und 3600 zu Aufsehern, welche die Leute zur Arbeit anzuhalten hatten.

2:17 And he set seventy thousand of them to carry burdens on their shoulders, and eighty thousand to hew stones in the mountains: and three thousand and six hundred to be overseers of the work of the people.
