4:1 Woher kommen die Kämpfe und woher die Streitigkeiten bei euch? Doch wohl daher, daß eure Lüste einen Kampf in euren Gliedern führen?

4:1 From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members?

4:2 Ihr seid begehrlich – und gelangt doch nicht zum Besitz; ihr mordet und seid neidisch, ohne doch eure Wünsche erfüllt zu sehen; ihr lebt in Kampf und Streitigkeiten und gelangt doch nicht zum Besitz, weil ihr nicht betet;

4:2 You covet, and have not: you kill and envy and cannot obtain. You contend and war, and you have not: because you ask not.

4:3 ihr betet wohl, empfangt aber nichts, weil ihr in böser Absicht betet, nämlich um (das Erbetene) in euren Lüsten wieder durchzubringen.

4:3 You ask and receive not: because you ask amiss, that you may consume it on your concupiscences.

4:4 Ihr gottabtrünnigen Seelen! Wißt ihr nicht, daß die Freundschaft mit der Welt Feindschaft gegen Gott ist? Wer also ein Freund der Welt sein will, erweist sich als Feind Gottes.

4:4 Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world becometh an enemy of God.

4:5 Oder meint ihr, die Schrift mache leere Worte, wenn sie sagt: »Eifersüchtiges Verlangen hegt der Geist, den er Wohnung in uns hat nehmen lassen«?

4:5 Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?

4:6 Um so reicher ist aber die Gnade, die er zuteilt. Darum heißt es: »Gott widersteht den Hoffärtigen, den Demütigen aber gibt er Gnade.«

4:6 But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble.

4:7 Unterwerft euch also Gott und widersteht dem Teufel, so wird er von euch fliehen.

4:7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil: and he will fly from you.

4:8 Nahet euch zu Gott, so wird er sich zu euch nahen; reinigt euch die Hände, ihr Sünder, und heiligt eure Herzen, ihr Doppelherzigen!

4:8 Draw nigh to God: and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

4:9 Fühlt euer Elend, trauert und weint! Euer Lachen verwandle sich in Traurigkeit und eure Freude in Betrübnis!

4:9 Be afflicted and mourn and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into sorrow.

4:10 Demütigt euch vor dem Herrn, so wird er euch erhöhen!

4:10 Be humbled in the sight of the Lord: and he will exalt you.

4:11 Redet nicht feindselig gegeneinander, liebe Brüder! Wer feindselig gegen seinen Bruder redet oder seinen Bruder richtet, der redet feindselig gegen das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz; wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du nicht ein Täter des Gesetzes, sondern ein Richter.

4:11 Detract not one another, my brethren. He that detracteth his brother, or he that judgeth his brother, detracteth the law and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

4:12 Nur einer ist Gesetzgeber und Richter; er, der die Macht hat zu erretten und zu verderben. Wer aber bist du, daß du dich zum Richter über den Nächsten machst?

4:12 There is one lawgiver and judge, that is able to destroy and to deliver.

4:13 Weiter nun: Ihr, die ihr sagt: »Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die und die Stadt ziehen, wollen dort ein Jahr bleiben, Geschäfte machen und Geld verdienen«, –

4:13 But who art thou that judgest thy neighbour? Behold, now you that say: To-day or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and there we will spend a year and will traffic and make our gain.

4:14 und ihr wißt doch nicht, was der morgende Tag bringen wird, wie es dann um euer Leben steht. Ihr seid doch nur ein Rauch, der für kurze Zeit sichtbar wird und dann verschwindet.

4:14 Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow.

4:15 Statt dessen solltet ihr sagen: »Wenn es der Wille des Herrn ist, werden wir am Leben bleiben und dies oder jenes tun.«

4:15 For what is your life? It is a vapour which appeareth for a little while and afterwards shall vanish away. For that you should say: If the Lord will, and, If we shall live, we will do this or that.

4:16 So aber tut ihr noch groß mit euren hochfahrenden Gedanken! Alle derartige Großtuerei ist verwerflich.

4:16 But now you rejoice in your arrogancies. All such rejoicing is wicked.

4:17 Wer also weiß, wie er sich richtig zu verhalten hat, es aber nicht tut, für den ist es Sünde.

4:17 To him therefore who knoweth to do good and doth it not, to him it is sin.
