40:1 Hierauf wandte sich der HERR weiter an Hiob mit der Frage:

40:1 And the Lord went on, and said to Job:

40:2 »Hadern will der Tadler mit dem Allmächtigen? Der Ankläger Gottes gebe Antwort darauf!«

40:2 Shall he that contendeth with God be so easily silenced? surely he that reproveth God, ought to answer him.

40:3 Da antwortete Hiob dem HERRN:

40:3 Then Job answered the Lord, and said:

40:4 »Ach, ich bin zu gering: was soll ich dir entgegnen? Ich lege meine Hand auf den Mund!

40:4 What can I answer, who hath spoken inconsiderately? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

40:5 Einmal habe ich geredet, werde aber nichts mehr entgegnen; und noch ein zweites Mal habe ich es getan, doch niemals tue ich es wieder.«

40:5 One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said: and another, to which I will add no more.

40:6 Weiter antwortete der HERR dem Hiob aus dem Wettersturm heraus folgendermaßen:

40:6 And the Lord answering Job out of the whirlwind, said:

40:7 »Auf! Gürte dir die Lenden wie ein Mann: ich will dich fragen, und du belehre mich!

40:7 Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and do thou tell me.

40:8 Willst du wirklich mein Recht zunichte machen, mich schuldig sprechen, damit du als gerecht dastehst?«

40:8 Wilt thou make void my judgment: and condemn me, that thou mayst be justified?

40:9 »Hast du etwa einen Arm wie Gott, und vermagst du den Donner so laut rollen zu lassen wie er?

40:9 And hast thou an arm like God, and canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

40:10 So schmücke dich doch mit Erhabenheit und Hoheit und kleide dich in Pracht und Herrlichkeit!

40:10 Clothe thyself with beauty, and set thyself up on high, and be glorious, and put on goodly garments.

40:11 Laß die Ausbrüche deines Zorns sich ergießen! Und gewahrst du irgendeinen Hochmütigen, so wirf ihn nieder!

40:11 Scatter the proud in thy indignation, and behold every arrogant man, and humble him.

40:12 Ja, gewahrst du irgendeinen Hochmütigen, so demütige ihn und stürze die Frevler nieder, wo sie stehen!

40:12 Look on all that are proud, and confound them, and crush the wicked in their place,

40:13 Laß sie allesamt tief in den Staub sinken, laß ihr Angesicht erstarren in Todesgrauen!

40:13 Hide them in the dust together, and plunge their faces into the pit.

40:14 Dann will auch ich dich lobend anerkennen, daß deine Rechte dir den Sieg verliehen hat.«

40:14 Then I will confess that thy right hand is able to save thee.

40:15 »Sieh doch das Nilpferd an, das ich geschaffen habe wie dich: von Pflanzen nährt es sich wie das Rind!

40:15 Behold behemoth whom I made with thee, he eateth grass like an ox.

40:16 Sieh doch, welche Kraft bei ihm in den Lenden wohnt und welche Stärke in den Muskeln seines Leibes!

40:16 His strength is in his loins, and his force in the navel of his belly.

40:17 Es macht seinen Schwanz so starr wie eine Zeder; die Sehnen seiner Schenkel sind fest verflochten.

40:17 He setteth up his tail like a cedar, the sinews of his testicles are wrapped together.

40:18 Seine Knochen sind Röhren von Erz, seine Gebeine gleich geschmiedeten Eisenstangen.

40:18 His bones are like pipes of brass, his gristle like plates of iron.

40:19 Es ist der Erstling der schöpferischen Tätigkeit Gottes; sein Bildner hat ihm auch sein Schwert verliehen.

40:19 He is the beginning of the ways of God, who made him, he will apply his sword.

40:20 Denn Futter liefern ihm die Anhöhen, wo alle wilden Landtiere spielen.

40:20 To him the mountains bring forth grass: there all the beasts of the field shall play.

40:21 Unter Lotusbüschen lagert es sich, im Versteck von Schilfrohr und Sumpf;

40:21 He sleepeth under the shadow, in the covert of the reed, and in moist places.

40:22 Lotusbüsche geben ihm Deckung mit ihrem Schattendach, und die Weiden des Baches umgeben es.

40:22 The shades cover his shadow, the willows of the brook shall compass him about.

40:23 Selbst wenn der Strom mächtig anschwillt, gerät es nicht in Unruhe: es bleibt wohlgemut, wenn auch ein Jordan gegen seinen Rachen andringt.

40:23 Behold, he will drink up a river, and not wonder: and he trusteth that the Jordan may run into his mouth.

40:24 Wer will es von vorn packen, wer mit einem Fangseil ihm die Nase durchbohren?

40:24 In his eyes as with a hook he shall take him, and bore through his nostrils with stakes.

40:25 Kannst du das Krokodil am Angelhaken heranziehen und ihm die Zunge mit der Schnur niederdrücken?

40:25 Canst thou draw out the leviathan with a hook, or canst thou tie his tongue with a cord?

40:26 Kannst du ihm einen Binsenring durch die Nase ziehen und einen Dorn durch seinen Kinnbacken bohren?

40:26 Canst thou put a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with a buckle?

40:27 Meinst du, es werde viele Bitten an dich richten oder dir gute Worte geben?

40:27 Will he make many supplications to thee, or speak soft words to thee?

40:28 Wird es einen Vertrag mit dir schließen, wonach du es für immer in deine Dienste nähmest?

40:28 Will he make a covenant with thee, and wilt thou take him to be a servant for ever,

40:29 Wirst du mit ihm spielen wie mit einem Vöglein und es zur Kurzweil für deine Mägdlein anbinden?

40:29 Shalt thou play with him as with a bird, or tie him up for thy handmaids?

40:30 Treibt die Fischerzunft Handel mit ihm, daß sie es stückweise an die Händler abgibt?

40:30 Shall friends cut him in pieces, shall merchants divide him?

40:31 Kannst du ihm die Haut mit Spießen spicken und seinen Kopf mit Fischerhaken durchbohren?

40:31 Wilt thou fill nets with his skin, and the cabins of fishes with his head?

40:32 Vergreife dich nur einmal an ihm: mache dich auf Kampf gefaßt! Du wirst’s gewiß nicht wieder tun!

40:32 Lay thy hand upon him: remember the battle, and speak no more.
