2:1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is to you.

2:1 »Und nun ergeht über euch, ihr Priester, folgender Beschluß:

2:2 If you will not hear, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name, saith the Lord of hosts: I will send poverty upon you, and will curse your blessings, yea I will curse them, because you have not laid it to heart.

2:2 Wenn ihr nicht gehorchen wollt und ihr es euch nicht von Herzen angelegen sein laßt, meinem Namen Ehre zu erweisen« – so spricht der HERR der Heerscharen –, »so schleudere ich den Fluch gegen euch und mache eure Segenssprüche zu Flüchen; ja, ich habe sie schon in Flüche verwandelt, weil ihr (meine Worte) nicht zu Herzen genommen habt.

2:3 Behold, I will cast the shoulder to you, and will scatter upon your face the dung of your solemnities, and it shall take you away with it.

2:3 Wisset wohl: ich mache eurer Amtstätigkeit ein Ende und schleudere euch Mist ins Gesicht, den Mist eurer Festopfer, und man mag euch selbst zu ihm hinaustragen!

2:4 And you shall know that I sent you this commandment, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.

2:4 Dann werdet ihr auch zur Erkenntnis kommen, daß ich diesen Beschluß über euch habe ergehen lassen, damit mein Bund mit Levi bestehen bleibe« – so spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.

2:5 My covenant was with him of life and peace: and I gave him fear: and he feared me, and he was afraid before my name.

2:5 »Mein Bund mit ihm war ein Bund des Lebens und des Friedens; beides verlieh ich ihm, damit er Furcht vor mir hätte: und er fürchtete mich auch und beugte sich vor meinem Namen.

2:6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace, and in equity, and turned many away from iniquity.

2:6 Zuverlässige Unterweisung war in seinem Munde, kein Trug fand sich auf seinen Lippen; in Frieden und Aufrichtigkeit wandelte er mit mir und hielt viele von Versündigung zurück.

2:7 For the lips of the priests shall keep knowledge, and they shall seek the law at his mouth: because he is the angel of the Lord of hosts.

2:7 Denn eines Priesters Lippen müssen Erkenntnis bewahren, und Unterweisung erwartet man aus seinem Munde; denn ein Bote des HERRN der Heerscharen ist er.

2:8 But you have departed out of the way, and have caused many to stumble at the law: you have made void the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.

2:8 Ihr dagegen seid vom rechten Wege abgewichen, habt viele durch eure Unterweisung zu Fall gebracht und den Bund mit Levi verderbt« – so spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.

2:9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible, and base before all people, as you have not kept my ways, and have accepted persons in the law.

2:9 »So habe denn auch ich euch beim ganzen Volk in Verachtung und Geringschätzung gebracht gerade so, wie ihr meine Wege nicht innehaltet und bei der Erteilung der Unterweisung die Person anseht.«

2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why then doth every one of us despise his brother, violating the covenant of our fathers?

2:10 Haben wir nicht alle einen Vater? Hat nicht ein Gott uns geschaffen? Warum handeln wir denn treulos gegeneinander und entweihen den Bund unserer Väter?

2:11 Juda hath transgressed, and abomination hath been committed in Israel, and in Jerusalem: for Juda hath profaned the holiness of the Lord, which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

2:11 Treubruch hat Juda begangen, und Greuel sind in Israel und in Jerusalem verübt worden; denn Juda hat das Heiligtum des HERRN, das er lieb hat, entweiht, indem es Ehen mit den Töchtern eines fremden Gottes geschlossen hat.

2:12 The Lord will cut off the man that hath done this, both the master, and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering to the Lord of hosts.

2:12 Ausrotten möge der HERR einem Manne, der solches tut, jeden Zeugen und Verteidiger aus den Zelten Jakobs sowie jeden, der dem HERRN der Heerscharen Opfergaben darbringt!

2:13 And this again have you done, you have covered the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and bellowing, so that I have no more a regard to sacrifice, neither do I accept any atonement at your hands.

2:13 Und zweitens tut ihr auch dieses: Ihr bedeckt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen, mit Weinen und Seufzen, so daß er nicht mehr gnädig auf ein Opfer hinblickt und keine Gabe mit Wohlgefallen aus eurer Hand mehr annehmen mag.

2:14 And you have said: For what cause? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee, and the wife of thy youth, whom thou hast despised: yet she was thy partner, and the wife of thy covenant.

2:14 Da fragt ihr: ›Warum das?‹ Nun darum, weil der HERR Zeuge gewesen ist (bei dem Bunde) zwischen dir und dem Weibe deiner Jugend, dem du die Treue gebrochen hast, obschon sie deine Lebensgefährtin und durch feierlichen Bundesschluß deine Gattin war.

2:15 Did not one make her, and she is the residue of his spirit? And what doth one seek, but the seed of God? Keep then your spirit, and despise not the wife of thy youth.

2:15 Darum hat kein einziger so gehandelt, der noch einen Rest des rechten Geistes besaß. Denn was verlangt der Eine? Gottessamen! So seid denn auf der Hut um eures Geistes willen, und handle du nicht treulos am Weibe deiner Jugend!

2:16 When thou shalt hate her put her away, saith the Lord, the God of Israel: but iniquity shalt cover his garment, saith the Lord of hosts, keep your spirit, and despise not.

2:16 »Denn ich hasse Entlassungen« – so spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels – »ebenso, wie wenn jemand sein Gewand mit Gewalttat bedeckt« – so spricht der HERR der Heerscharen. »So seid denn auf der Hut um eures Geistes willen, daß ihr nicht die Treue brecht!«

2:17 You have wearied the Lord with your words, and you said: Wherein have we wearied him? In that you say: Every one that doth evil, is good in the sight of the Lord, and such please him: or surely where is the God of judgment?

2:17 Ihr habt dem HERRN durch eure Reden Verdruß bereitet und fragt doch: »Wieso haben wir ihm Verdruß bereitet?« Nun dadurch, daß ihr sagt: »Jeder Übeltäter ist doch gut in den Augen des HERRN, und an solchen Leuten hat er Wohlgefallen« oder: »Wo ist denn der Gott des Gerichts?«
