18:1 When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.

18:1 Nachdem Jesus so gebetet hatte, ging er mit seinen Jüngern (aus der Stadt) hinaus über den Bach Kidron hinüber an einen Ort, wo ein Garten war, in den er mit seinen Jüngern eintrat.

18:2 And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.

18:2 Aber auch Judas, sein Verräter, kannte diesen Ort, weil Jesus dort oft mit seinen Jüngern zusammengekommen war.

18:3 Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

18:3 Nachdem nun Judas die Abteilung Soldaten und von den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern Diener erhalten hatte, kam er mit Fackeln, Laternen und Waffen dorthin.

18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth and said to them: Whom seek ye?

18:4 Wiewohl nun Jesus alles wußte, was über ihn kommen würde, trat er doch (aus dem Garten) hinaus und fragte sie: »»»Wen sucht ihr?«

18:5 They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.

18:5 Sie antworteten ihm: »Jesus von Nazareth.« Er sagte zu ihnen: »Der bin ich.« Auch Judas, sein Verräter, stand bei ihnen.

18:6 As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward and fell to the ground.

18:6 Als Jesus nun zu ihnen sagte: »Der bin ich!«, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.

18:7 Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said: Jesus of Nazareth.

18:7 Da fragte er sie nochmals: »Wen sucht ihr?« Sie sagten: »Jesus von Nazareth.«

18:8 Jesus answered: I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,

18:8 Jesus antwortete: »Ich habe euch gesagt, daß ich es bin. Wenn ihr also mich sucht, so laßt diese hier gehen!«

18:9 That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.

18:9 So sollte sich das Wort erfüllen, das er ausgesprochen hatte: »Ich habe keinen von denen, die du mir gegeben hast, verloren gehen lassen.«

18:10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. And the name of thee servant was Malchus.

18:10 Da nun Simon Petrus ein Schwert bei sich hatte, zog er es heraus, schlug damit nach dem Knechte des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Knecht hieß Malchus.

18:11 Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

18:11 Da sagte Jesus zu Petrus: »Stecke das Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir der Vater gereicht hat?«

18:12 Then the band and the tribune and the servants of the Jews took Jesus and bound him.

18:12 Hierauf nahmen die Abteilung Soldaten mit ihrem Hauptmann und die Diener der Juden Jesus fest, fesselten ihn

18:13 And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.

18:13 und führten ihn zunächst zu Hannas ab; dieser war nämlich der Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, der in jenem Jahre Hoherpriester war.

18:14 Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

18:14 Kaiphas aber war es, der den Juden den Rat gegeben hatte, es sei besser, daß ein einzelner Mensch für das Volk sterbe.

18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus: and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

18:15 Simon Petrus aber und noch ein anderer Jünger waren Jesus nachgefolgt. Dieser (andere) Jünger war aber mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging (deshalb) gleichzeitig mit Jesus in den Palast des Hohenpriesters hinein,

18:16 But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the portress and brought in Peter.

18:16 während Petrus draußen vor der Tür stehenblieb. Da ging der andere Jünger, der mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus, redete mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein.

18:17 The maid therefore that was portress saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciple? He saith I am not.

18:17 Da sagte die Magd, welche die Tür hütete, zu Petrus: »Gehörst du nicht auch zu den Jüngern dieses Menschen?« Er antwortete: »Nein.«

18:18 Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing and warming himself.

18:18 Es standen aber die Knechte und Diener da, hatten sich wegen der Kälte ein Kohlenfeuer angemacht und wärmten sich daran; aber auch Petrus stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich.

18:19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine.

18:19 Der Hohepriester (Hannas) befragte nun Jesus über seine Jünger und seine Lehre.

18:20 Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort: and in secret I have spoken nothing.

18:20 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Ich habe frei und offen zu aller Welt geredet; ich habe allezeit in den Synagogen und im Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen; im geheimen habe ich überhaupt nicht geredet.

18:21 Why askest thou me? Ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them. Behold they know what things I have said.

18:21 Warum fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe.«

18:22 And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?

18:22 Als er das ausgesprochen hatte, gab einer von den Dienern, der dabeistand, Jesus einen Schlag ins Gesicht und sagte: »So antwortest du dem Hohenpriester?«

18:23 Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?

18:23 Jesus entgegnete ihm: »Wenn ich ungehörig gesprochen habe, so gib an, was ungehörig daran gewesen ist; wenn ich aber richtig gesprochen habe, warum schlägst du mich?«

18:24 And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.

18:24 Darauf sandte Hannas ihn gefesselt zum Hohenpriester Kaiphas.

18:25 And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it and said: I am not.

18:25 Simon Petrus aber stand (unterdessen) da und wärmte sich. Da fragten sie ihn: »Gehörst du nicht auch zu seinen Jüngern?«

18:26 One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

18:26 Er leugnete aber mit einem »Nein«. Da sagte einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter des Knechtes, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: »Habe ich dich nicht in dem Garten bei ihm gesehen?«

18:27 Again therefore Peter denied: and immediately the cock crew.

18:27 Da leugnete Petrus nochmals; und sogleich darauf krähte der Hahn.

18:28 Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning: and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.

18:28 Man führte Jesus dann aus dem Hause des Kaiphas nach der Statthalterei; es war früh am Morgen. Die Juden selbst gingen dabei nicht in die Statthalterei hinein, um nicht unrein zu werden, sondern das Passah essen zu können.

18:29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?

18:29 Darum kam Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte sie: »Welche Anklage habt ihr gegen diesen Mann zu erheben?«

18:30 They answered and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.

18:30 Sie antworteten ihm mit den Worten: »Wenn dieser Mensch kein Verbrecher wäre, so hätten wir ihn dir nicht überliefert!«

18:31 Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.

18:31 Da sagte Pilatus zu ihnen: »Nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz.« Da entgegneten ihm die Juden: »Wir haben nicht das Recht, jemand hinzurichten« –

18:32 That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.

18:32 so sollte sich das Wort Jesu erfüllen, durch das er die Art seines Todes angedeutet hatte.

18:33 Pilate therefore went into the hall again and called Jesus and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?

18:33 Pilatus ging nun wieder in die Statthalterei hinein, ließ Jesus rufen und fragte ihn: »Bist du der König der Juden?«

18:34 Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?

18:34 Jesus antwortete: »Fragst du so von dir selbst aus, oder haben andere es dir von mir gesagt?«

18:35 Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me. What hast thou done?

18:35 Pilatus antwortete: »Ich bin doch kein Jude! Dein Volk und zwar die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überantwortet: was hast du verbrochen?«

18:36 Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.

18:36 Jesus antwortete: »Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt. Wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, so würden meine Diener (für mich) kämpfen, damit ich den Juden nicht überliefert würde; nun aber ist mein Reich nicht von hier.«

18:37 Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

18:37 Da sagte Pilatus zu ihm: »Ein König bist du also?« Jesus antwortete: »Ja, ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, um für die Wahrheit Zeugnis abzulegen; jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört auf meine Stimme.«

18:38 Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews and saith to them: I find no cause in him.

18:38 Darauf antwortete ihm Pilatus: »Was ist Wahrheit?!« Nach diesen Worten ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: »Ich finde keinerlei Schuld an ihm.

18:39 But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the Pasch. Will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?

18:39 Es ist aber herkömmlich bei euch, daß ich euch am Passah einen (Gefangenen) freigebe: soll ich euch also den König der Juden freigeben?«

18:40 Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

18:40 Da riefen sie wieder laut: »Nein, nicht diesen, sondern den Barabbas!« Barabbas war aber ein Räuber.
