1:1 In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God.

1:1 Im Anfang war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott, und Gott war das Wort.

1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

1:2 Dieses war im Anfang bei Gott.

1:3 All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.

1:3 Alle Dinge sind durch dieses (Wort) geworden, und ohne dieses ist nichts geworden (von allem), was geworden ist.

1:4 In him was life: and the life was the light of men.

1:4 In ihm war Leben, und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen.

1:5 And the light shineth in darkness: and the darkness did not comprehend it.

1:5 Und das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis, doch die Finsternis hat es nicht ergriffen.

1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

1:6 Es trat ein Mann auf, von Gott gesandt, sein Name war Johannes;

1:7 This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.

1:7 dieser kam, um Zeugnis abzulegen, Zeugnis von dem Licht, damit alle durch ihn zum Glauben kämen.

1:8 He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.

1:8 Er war nicht selbst das Licht, sondern Zeugnis sollte er von dem Licht ablegen.

1:9 That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.

1:9 Das Licht war da, das wahre, das jeden Menschen erleuchtet, es kam gerade in die Welt;

1:10 He was in the world: and the world was made by him: and the world knew him not.

1:10 es war in der Welt, und die Welt war durch ihn (der das Licht war) geschaffen worden, doch die Welt erkannte ihn nicht.

1:11 He came unto his own: and his own received him not.

1:11 Er kam in das Seine, doch die Seinen nahmen ihn nicht auf;

1:12 But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.

1:12 allen aber, die ihn annahmen, verlieh er das Anrecht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, nämlich denen, die an seinen Namen glauben,

1:13 Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1:13 die nicht durch Geblüt oder durch den Naturtrieb des Fleisches, auch nicht durch den Willen eines Mannes, sondern aus Gott gezeugt sind.

1:14 And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.

1:14 Und das Wort wurde Fleisch und nahm seine Wohnung unter uns, und wir haben seine Herrlichkeit geschaut, eine Herrlichkeit, wie sie dem eingeborenen Sohne vom Vater verliehen wird; eine mit Gnade und Wahrheit erfüllte.

1:15 John beareth witness of him and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me is preferred before me: because he was before me.

1:15 Johannes legt Zeugnis von ihm ab und hat laut verkündet: »Dieser war es, von dem ich gesagt habe: ›Der nach mir kommt, ist (schon) vor mir gewesen, denn er war eher als ich.‹«

1:16 And of his fulness we all have received: and grace for grace.

1:16 Aus seiner Fülle haben wir ja alle empfangen, und zwar Gnade über Gnade.

1:17 For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

1:17 Denn das Gesetz ist durch Mose gegeben worden, aber die Gnade und die Wahrheit sind durch Jesus Christus geworden.

1:18 No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the Bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

1:18 Niemand hat Gott jemals gesehen: der eingeborene Sohn, der an des Vaters Brust liegt, der hat Kunde (von ihm) gebracht.

1:19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?

1:19 Dies ist nun das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden aus Jerusalem Priester und Leviten zu ihm sandten, die ihn fragen sollten, wer er sei.

1:20 And he confessed and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.

1:20 Da bekannte er unverhohlen und erklärte offen: »Ich bin nicht Christus.«

1:21 And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.

1:21 Sie fragten ihn weiter: »Was denn? Bist du Elia?« Er sagte: »Nein, ich bin es nicht.« »Bist du der Prophet?« Er antwortete: »Nein.«

1:22 They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?

1:22 Da sagten sie zu ihm: »Wer bist du denn? Wir müssen doch denen, die uns gesandt haben, eine Antwort bringen! Wofür gibst du selbst dich aus?«

1:23 He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.

1:23 Da antwortete er: »Ich bin die Stimme dessen, der in der Wüste ruft: ›Ebnet dem Herrn den Weg!‹, wie der Prophet Jesaja geboten hat.«

1:24 And they that were sent were of the Pharisees.

1:24 Die Gesandten aber gehörten zu den Pharisäern

1:25 And they asked him and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?

1:25 und fragten ihn weiter: »Warum taufst du denn, wenn du weder Christus noch Elia, noch der Prophet bist?«

1:26 John answered them, saying: I baptize with water: but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.

1:26 Da antwortete Johannes ihnen: »Ich taufe nur mit Wasser; aber mitten unter euch steht der, den ihr nicht kennt,

1:27 The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.

1:27 der nach mir kommt und für den ich nicht gut genug bin, ihm den Riemen seines Schuhwerks aufzubinden.«

1:28 These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

1:28 Dies ist in Bethanien geschehen jenseits des Jordans, wo Johannes sich aufhielt und taufte.

1:29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him; and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.

1:29 Am folgenden Tage sah er Jesus auf sich zukommen; da sagte er: »Seht, das Lamm Gottes, das die Sünde der Welt hinwegnimmt!

1:30 This is he of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.

1:30 Dieser ist’s, von dem ich gesagt habe: ›Nach mir kommt ein Mann, der (schon) vor mir gewesen ist; denn er war eher da als ich.‹

1:31 And I knew him not: but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

1:31 Ich selbst kannte ihn nicht; aber damit er Israel offenbart würde, deshalb bin ich gekommen, ich mit meiner Wassertaufe.«

1:32 And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven; and he remained upon him.

1:32 Weiter legte Johannes Zeugnis ab mit den Worten: »Ich habe gesehen, daß der Geist wie eine Taube aus dem Himmel herabschwebte und auf ihm blieb;

1:33 And I knew him not: but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

1:33 und ich selbst kannte ihn nicht, aber der, welcher mich gesandt hat, um mit Wasser zu taufen, der hat zu mir gesagt: ›Auf welchen du den Geist herabschweben und auf ihm bleiben siehst, der ist’s, der mit heiligem Geiste tauft.‹

1:34 And I saw: and I gave testimony that this is the Son of God.

1:34 Nun habe ich selbst es auch gesehen und bezeugt, daß dieser der Sohn Gottes ist.«

1:35 The next day again John stood and two of his disciples.

1:35 Am folgenden Tage stand Johannes wieder da mit zweien seiner Jünger,

1:36 And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God.

1:36 und indem er den Blick auf Jesus richtete, der dort umherging, sagte er: »Seht, das Lamm Gottes!«

1:37 And the two disciples heard him speak: and they followed Jesus.

1:37 Als die beiden Jünger ihn das sagen hörten, gingen sie hinter Jesus her;

1:38 And Jesus turning and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him: Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Master), where dwellest thou?

1:38 dieser wandte sich um, und als er sie hinter sich herkommen sah, fragte er sie: »Was sucht ihr?« Sie antworteten ihm: »Rabbi« – das heißt übersetzt ›Meister‹ –, »wo hast du deine Herberge?«

1:39 He saith to them: Come and see. They came and saw where he abode: and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.

1:39 Er antwortete ihnen: »Kommt mit, so werdet ihr es sehen!« Sie gingen also mit und sahen, wo er seine Herberge hatte, und blieben jenen ganzen Tag bei ihm; es war um die zehnte Stunde.

1:40 And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John and followed him.

1:40 Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, war einer von den beiden, die es von Johannes gehört hatten und hinter Jesus hergegangen waren.

1:41 He findeth first his brother Simon and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

1:41 Dieser traf zuerst seinen Bruder Simon und sagte zu ihm: »Wir haben den Messias« – das heißt übersetzt ›den Gesalbten‹ – »gefunden.«

1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona. Thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.

1:42 Er führte ihn dann zu Jesus; dieser blickte ihn an und sagte: »Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Johannes; du sollst Kephas – das heißt übersetzt ›Fels‹ – heißen.«

1:43 On the following day, he would go forth into Galilee: and he findeth Philip, And Jesus saith to him: follow me.

1:43 Am folgenden Tage wollte Jesus nach Galiläa aufbrechen; da traf er Philippus und sagte zu ihm: »Folge mir nach!«

1:44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

1:44 Philippus stammte aber aus Bethsaida, dem Heimatort des Andreas und des Petrus.

1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses, in the law and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.

1:45 Philippus traf (darauf) den Nathanael und berichtete ihm: »Wir haben den gefunden, von welchem Mose im Gesetz und die Propheten geschrieben haben, Jesus, den Sohn Josephs, aus Nazareth.«

1:46 And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see.

1:46 Da sagte Nathanael zu ihm: »Kann aus Nazareth etwas Gutes kommen?« Philippus erwiderte ihm: »Komm mit uns sieh!«

1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.

1:47 Als Jesus den Nathanael auf sich zukommen sah, sagte er von ihm: »Siehe da, in Wahrheit ein Israelit, in dem kein Falsch ist!«

1:48 Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

1:48 Nathanael fragte ihn: »Woher kennst du mich?« Jesus antwortete ihm mit den Worten: »Noch ehe Philippus dich rief, als du unter dem Feigenbaum warst, habe ich dich gesehen.«

1:49 Nathanael answered him and said: Rabbi: Thou art the Son of God. Thou art the King of Israel.

1:49 Da antwortete ihm Nathanael: »Rabbi, du bist Gottes Sohn, du bist der König von Israel!«

1:50 Jesus answered and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.

1:50 Jesus gab ihm zur Antwort: »Du glaubst (an mich), weil ich dir gesagt habe, daß ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum gesehen habe? Du wirst noch Größeres als dies zu sehen bekommen.«

1:51 And he saith to him: Amen, amen, I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

1:51 Dann fuhr er fort: »Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: Ihr werdet den Himmel offen sehen und die Engel Gottes über dem Menschensohn hinauf- und herabsteigen sehen.«
