31:1 And the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelboe.

31:1 Als es aber zwischen den Philistern und Israeliten zur Schlacht kam, wurden die Israeliten von den Philistern in die Flucht geschlagen, und viele Erschlagene lagen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa umher.

31:2 And the Philistines fell upon Saul, and upon his sons, and they slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchisua, the sons of Saul.

31:2 Die Philister setzten Saul und seinen Söhnen hart zu und erschlugen Sauls Söhne Jonathan, Abinadab und Malchisua.

31:3 And the whole weight of the battle was turned upon Saul: and the archers overtook him, and he was grievously wounded by the archers.

31:3 Als dann ein wilder Kampf um Saul her entstand und die Bogenschützen ihn ausfindig gemacht hatten, da ward er von den Bogenschützen in den Unterleib getroffen.

31:4 Then Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and slay me, and mock at me. And his armourbearer would not: for he was struck with exceeding great fear. Then Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.

31:4 Da befahl Saul seinem Waffenträger: »Ziehe dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit, auf daß nicht diese Heiden kommen und ihren Mutwillen an mir auslassen!« Aber sein Waffenträger weigerte sich, weil er sich zu sehr fürchtete. Da nahm Saul das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.

31:5 And when his armourbearer saw this, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.

31:5 Als nun sein Waffenträger sah, daß Saul tot war, stürzte er sich gleichfalls in sein Schwert und starb neben ihm.

31:6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men that same day together.

31:6 So fanden Saul, seine drei Söhne und sein Waffenträger an jenem Tage zusammen ihren Tod.

31:7 And the men of Israel, that were beyond the valley, and beyond the Jordan, seeing that the Israelites were fled, and that Saul was dead, and his sons, forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came and dwelt there.

31:7 Als aber die Israeliten, die in den Städten der Ebene (Jesreel) und in den Städten am Jordan wohnten, sahen, daß die Israeliten geflohen und daß Saul samt seinen Söhnen gefallen war, verließen sie ihre Städte und ergriffen die Flucht; da kamen die Philister und setzten sich darin fest.

31:8 And on the morrow the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gelboe.

31:8 Als dann am nächsten Tage die Philister kamen, um die Gefallenen auszuplündern, fanden sie die Leichen Sauls und seiner drei Söhne auf dem Gebirge Gilboa liegen.

31:9 And they cut off Saul's head, and stripped him of his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the temples of their idols and among their people.

31:9 Da hieben sie ihm den Kopf ab, zogen ihm seine Rüstung aus und sandten (Boten) in allen Teilen des Philisterlandes umher, um die Siegesbotschaft in ihren Götzentempeln und unter dem Volke zu verkünden.

31:10 And they put his armour in the temple of Astaroth, but his body they hung on the wall of Bethsan.

31:10 Seine Waffen legten sie im Tempel der Astarte nieder, seine Leiche aber hängten sie an der Mauer von Beth-San auf.

31:11 Now when the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

31:11 Als aber die Einwohner von Jabes in Gilead erfuhren, was die Philister an Saul verübt hatten,

31:12 All the most valiant men arose, and walked all the night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Bethsan: and they came to Jabes Galaad, and burnt them there.

31:12 machten sich alle streitbaren Männer auf, marschierten die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichen seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Beth-San herab, kehrten mit ihnen nach Jabes zurück und verbrannten sie dort.

31:13 And they took their bones, and buried them in the wood of Jabes: and fasted seven days.

31:13 Hierauf nahmen sie ihre Gebeine, begruben sie unter der Tamariske in Jabes und hielten sieben Tage lang ein Fasten.
