4:1 Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and the dispensers of the mysteries of God.

4:1 Dafür halte uns jedermann, nämlich für Diener Christi und für Verwalter der Geheimnisse Gottes.

4:2 Here now it is required among the dispensers that a man be found faithful.

4:2 Bei dieser Sachlage verlangt man allerdings von den Verwaltern, daß ein solcher treu erfunden werde.

4:3 But to me it is a very small thing to be judged by you or by man's day. But neither do I judge my own self.

4:3 Doch was mich betrifft, so ist es mir etwas ganz Geringes, ob ich von euch oder von (sonst) einem menschlichen Gerichtstage ein Urteil empfange; ja, ich gebe nicht einmal selbst ein Urteil über mich ab.

4:4 For I am not conscious to myself of anything. Yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

4:4 Denn ich bin mir wohl keiner Schuld bewußt, aber dadurch bin ich noch nicht gerechtfertigt; nein, der Herr ist’s, der das Urteil über mich abgibt.

4:5 Therefore, judge not before the time: until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts. And then shall every man have praise from God.

4:5 Daher urteilet über nichts vor der Zeit, bis der Herr kommt, der auch das im Dunkel Verborgene ans Licht bringen und die Gedanken der Herzen offenbar machen wird; und dann wird einem jeden das ihm gebührende Lob von Gott her zuteil werden.

4:6 But these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollo, for your sakes: that in us you may learn that one be not puffed up against the other for another, above that which is written.

4:6 Ich habe das Gesagte aber, liebe Brüder, auf mich und Apollos bezogen (und zwar) mit Rücksicht auf euch, damit ihr an uns (beiden) das Wort verstehen lernt: »Nicht hinausgehen über das, was geschrieben steht!«, damit sich niemand (von euch) für den einen (Lehrer) gegen den andern aufblähen möge.

4:7 For who distinguisheth thee? Or what hast thou that thou hast not received, and if thou hast received, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?

4:7 Denn wer ist es, der dir ein Vorrecht gibt? Was besitzest du aber, das du nicht empfangen hättest? Wenn du es aber empfangen hast, was rühmst du dich, als ob du es nicht empfangen hättest?

4:8 You are now full: you are now become rich: you reign without us; and I would to God you did reign, that we also might reign with you.

4:8 Ihr (freilich) seid bereits gesättigt, seid bereits im Besitz des Reichtums, habt es ohne unser Zutun zu königlicher Herrschaft (im Gottesreich) gebracht! Wollte Gott, ihr hättet es wirklich schon zu königlicher Herrschaft gebracht, damit auch wir mit euch zum Herrschen kämen!

4:9 For I think that God hath set forth us apostles, the last, as it were men appointed to death. We are made a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men.

4:9 Denn ich bin der Ansicht, Gott habe uns Aposteln den letzten Platz zugewiesen wie zum Tode verurteilten (Verbrechern); wir sind ja der (ganzen) Welt, Engeln sowohl wie Menschen, ein Schaustück geworden!

4:10 We are fools for Christs sake, but you are wise in Christ: we are weak, but you are strong: you are honourable, but we without honour.

4:10 Wir stehen als Toren da um Christi willen, ihr aber seid kluge Leute in Christus; wir sind schwach, ihr aber stark; ihr steht in Ehren und wir in Verachtung.

4:11 Even unto this hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no fixed abode.

4:11 Bis zur jetzigen Stunde leiden wir Hunger und Durst, haben keine Kleidung und müssen uns mit Fäusten schlagen lassen, führen ein unstetes Leben

4:12 And we labour, working with our own hands. We are reviled: and we bless. We are persecuted: and we suffer it.

4:12 und mühen uns ab, um mit eigenen Händen das tägliche Brot zu verdienen. Schmäht man uns, so segnen wir; verfolgt man uns, so halten wir geduldig still;

4:13 We are blasphemed: and we entreat. We are made as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all, even until now.

4:13 beschimpft man uns, so geben wir gute Worte: wie der Kehricht der Welt, wie der allgemeine Auswurf sind wir bis heute geworden.

4:14 I write not these things to confound you: but I admonish you as my dearest children.

4:14 Ich schreibe dies nicht, um euch zu beschämen, sondern um euch als meine geliebten Kinder zu ermahnen.

4:15 For if you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, by the gospel, I have begotten you.

4:15 Denn wenn ihr auch viele tausend Lehrmeister in Christus hättet, so habt ihr doch nicht viele Väter; denn in Christus Jesus bin ich durch die (Verkündigung der) Heilsbotschaft euer (geistlicher) Vater geworden.

4:16 Wherefore, I beseech you, be ye followers of me as I also am of Christ.

4:16 Daher rufe ich euch mahnend zu: »Nehmt mich zum Vorbild!«

4:17 For this cause have I sent to you Timothy, who is my dearest son and faithful in the Lord. Who will put you in mind of my ways, which are in Christ Jesus: as I teach every where in every church.

4:17 Eben deswegen habe ich auch Timotheus zu euch gesandt, mein im Herrn geliebtes und treues Kind; er wird euch an meine Wege in Christus Jesus erinnern, wie ich sie überall in jeder Gemeinde lehre.

4:18 As if I would not come to you, so some are puffed up.

4:18 Freilich haben sich einige (bei euch) in der Annahme, daß ich nicht zu euch kommen würde, in die Brust geworfen;

4:19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will: and will know, not the speech of them that are puffed up, but the power.

4:19 ich werde aber, wenn es des Herrn Wille ist, bald zu euch kommen und dann nicht die Worte derer prüfen, die sich so in die Brust geworfen haben, sondern ihre Kraft;

4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in speech, but in power.

4:20 denn nicht auf Worten beruht das Reich Gottes, sondern auf Kraft.

4:21 What will you? Shall I come to you with a rod? Or in charity and in the spirit of meekness?

4:21 Was wünscht ihr nun? Soll ich mit dem Stock zu euch kommen oder mit Liebe und dem Geiste der Sanftmut?
