2:1 Nun besaß Noomi einen Verwandten von seiten ihres Mannes, einen sehr wohlhabenden Mann aus der Familie Elimelechs, namens Boas.

2:1 Now her husband Elimelech had a kinsman, a powerful man, and very rich, whose name was Booz.

2:2 Als nun die Moabitin Ruth zu Noomi sagte: »Ich will doch aufs Feld gehen und Ähren lesen hinter einem her, der es mir erlauben wird«, erwiderte diese ihr: »Geh nur, meine Tochter!«

2:2 And Ruth, the Moabitess, said to her mother-in-law: If thou wilt, I will go into the field, and glean the ears of corn that escape the hands of the reapers, wheresoever I shall find grace with a householder, that will be favourable to me. And she answered her: Go, my daughter.

2:3 So ging sie denn hin und las auf dem Felde hinter den Schnittern her auf, und der Zufall wollte es, daß das Grundstück dem Boas gehörte, der aus der Familie Elimelechs stammte.

2:3 She went, therefore, and gleaned the ears of corn after the reapers. And it happened that the owner of that field was Booz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

2:4 Da kam Boas gerade aus Bethlehem und sagte zu den Schnittern: »Der HERR sei mit euch!«; sie antworteten ihm: »Der HERR segne dich!«

2:4 And behold, he came out of Bethlehem, and said to the reapers: The Lord be with you. And they answered him: The Lord bless thee.

2:5 Darauf fragte Boas den Großknecht bei seinen Schnittern: »Wem gehört das Mädchen da?«

2:5 And Booz said to the young man that was set over the reapers: Whose maid is this?

2:6 Der Großknecht antwortete: »Es ist das moabitische Mädchen, das mit Noomi aus dem Lande der Moabiter heimgekehrt ist.

2:6 And he answered him: This is the Moabitess, who came with Noemi, from the land of Moab,

2:7 Sie hat uns gebeten: ›Laßt mich doch Ähren lesen und zwischen den Garben sammeln hinter den Schnittern her!‹ So ist sie denn gekommen und hat ausgehalten vom frühen Morgen an bis jetzt und sich keinen Augenblick Ruhe gegönnt.«

2:7 And she desired leave to glean the ears of corn that remain, following the steps of the reapers: and she hath been in the field from morning till now, and hath not gone home for one moment.

2:8 Da sagte Boas zu Ruth: »Hörst du wohl, meine Tochter? Du brauchst auf kein anderes Feld zu gehen, um dort aufzulesen, und brauchst auch nicht von hier wegzugehen, sondern schließe dich hier an meine Mägde an!

2:8 And Booz said to Ruth: Hear me, daughter, do not go to glean in any other field, and do not depart from this place: but keep with my maids,

2:9 Laß deine Augen immer auf das Feld gerichtet sein, wo sie schneiden, und gehe hinter ihnen her; ich habe auch den Knechten befohlen, dich nicht zu belästigen. Und wenn du Durst hast, so gehe nur zu den Gefäßen und trinke von dem Wasser, das die Knechte geholt haben!«

2:9 And follow where they reap. For I have charged my young men, not to molest thee: and if thou art thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink of the waters whereof the servants drink.

2:10 Da warf sie sich mit dem Angesicht vor ihm auf die Erde nieder und sagte zu ihm: »Wie kommt’s doch, daß du so freundlich gegen mich bist und dich meiner annimmst, da ich doch eine Ausländerin bin?«

2:10 She fell on her face, and worshipping upon the ground, said to him: Whence cometh this to me, that I should find grace before thy eyes, and that thou shouldst vouchsafe to take notice of me, a woman of another country?

2:11 Boas antwortete ihr: »O es ist mir alles genau berichtet worden, was du an deiner Schwiegermutter nach dem Tode deines Mannes getan hast: Vater, Mutter und Heimatland hast du verlassen und bist zu einem Volk gezogen, das du früher nicht kanntest.

2:11 And he answered her: All hath been told me, that thou hast done to thy mother-in-law after the death of thy husband: and how thou hast left thy parents, and the land wherein thou wast born, and art come to a people which thou knewest not heretofore.

2:12 Der HERR vergelte dir dein Tun, und voller Lohn möge dir zuteil werden vom HERRN, dem Gott Israels, unter dessen Flügeln du Schutz zu suchen hergekommen bist!«

2:12 The Lord render unto thee for thy work, and mayst thou receive a full reward of the Lord the God of Israel, to whom thou art come, and under whose wings thou art fled.

2:13 Da antwortete sie: »Ich danke dir für deine Freundlichkeit, mein Herr! Denn du hast mich getröstet und deiner Magd mit Herzlichkeit zugesprochen, obgleich ich nicht einmal wie eine von deinen Mägden bin.«

2:13 And she said: I have found grace in thy eyes, my lord, who hast comforted me, and hast spoken to the heart of thy handmaid, who am not like to one of thy maids.

2:14 Zur Essenszeit sagte dann Boas zu ihr: »Komm hierher und iß mit von dem Brot und tunke deinen Bissen in den Essig!« Als sie sich nun neben die Schnitter gesetzt hatte, reichte er ihr geröstete Körner, und sie aß, bis sie satt war, und behielt noch einen Teil übrig.

2:14 And Booz said to her: At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. So she sat at the side of the reapers, and she heaped to herself frumenty, and ate and was filled, and took the leavings.

2:15 Als sie dann aufstand, um wieder zu lesen, gab Boas seinen Knechten den Befehl: »Sie darf auch zwischen den Garben lesen, und ihr sollt ihr nichts zuleide tun!

2:15 And she arose from thence, to glean the ears of corn as before. And Booz commanded his servants, saying: If she would even reap with you, hinder her not:

2:16 Zieht vielmehr hin und wieder Halme für sie aus den Bündeln heraus und laßt sie liegen; sie mag sie dann auflesen, ohne daß ihr sie scheltet!«

2:16 And let fall some of your handfuls of purpose, and leave them, that she may gather them without shame, and let no man rebuke her when she gathereth them.

2:17 So las sie denn auf dem Felde bis zum Abend, und als sie dann das ausklopfte, was sie gesammelt hatte, war es beinahe ein Epha Gerste.

2:17 She gleaned therefore in the field till evening: and beating out with a rod, and threshing what she had gleaned, she found about the measure of an ephi of barley, that is, three bushels:

2:18 Sie hob es auf, ging in die Stadt und zeigte ihrer Schwiegermutter, was sie gelesen hatte; dann holte sie auch noch das hervor, was sie vom Essen übrigbehalten hatte, und gab es ihr.

2:18 Which she took up, and returned into the city, and shewed it to her mother-in-law: moreover, she brought out, and gave her of the remains of her meat, wherewith she had been filled.

2:19 Da sagte ihre Schwiegermutter zu ihr: »Wo hast du heute so fleißig gelesen? Gesegnet sei, der sich deiner so freundlich angenommen hat!« Nun erzählte sie ihrer Schwiegermutter, auf wessen Felde sie bei der Arbeit gewesen war, und sagte: »Der Mann, auf dessen Felde ich heute bei der Arbeit gewesen bin, heißt Boas.«

2:19 And her mother-in-law said to her: Where hast thou gleaned today, and where hast thou wrought? blessed be he that hath had pity on thee. And she told her with whom she had wrought: and she told the man's name, that he was called Booz.

2:20 Da erwiderte Noomi ihrer Schwiegertochter: »Gesegnet sei er vom HERRN, der seine Güte weder den noch Lebenden noch den schon Toten entzogen hat!« Dann fuhr Noomi fort: »Der Mann ist mit uns nahe verwandt; er ist einer von unsern Lösern.«

2:20 And Noemi answered her: Blessed be he of the Lord: because the same kindness which he shewed to the living, he hath kept also to the dead. And again she said: The man is our kinsman.

2:21 Darauf sagte die Moabitin Ruth: »Er hat auch zu mir gesagt: ›Halte dich nur zu meinen Leuten, bis sie mit meiner ganzen Ernte fertig sind!‹«

2:21 And Ruth said: He also charged me, that I should keep close to his reapers, till all the corn should be reaped.

2:22 Da antwortete Noomi ihrer Schwiegertochter Ruth: »Es ist gut, liebe Tochter, wenn du mit seinen Mägden hinausgehst: so kann man dir auf einem andern Felde nichts zuleide tun.«

2:22 And her mother-in-law said to her: It is better for thee, my daughter, to go out to reap with his maids, lest in another man's field some one may resist thee.

2:23 So hielt sie sich denn beim Ährenlesen zu den Mägden des Boas, bis die Gersten- und Weizenernte zu Ende war; dann blieb sie bei ihrer Schwiegermutter zu Hause.

2:23 So she kept close to the maids of Booz: and continued to glean with them, till all the barley and the wheat were laid up in the barns.
