5:1 Als Jesus nun die Volksscharen sah, ging er ins Gebirge hinauf, und nachdem er sich dort gesetzt hatte, traten seine Jünger zu ihm.

5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came unto him.

5:2 Da tat er seinen Mund auf und lehrte sie mit den Worten:

5:2 And opening his mouth he taught them, saying:

5:3 »Selig sind die geistlich Armen, denn ihnen wird das Himmelreich zuteil!

5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:4 Selig sind die Bekümmerten, denn sie werden getröstet werden! –

5:4 Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.

5:5 Selig sind die Sanftmütigen, denn sie werden das Land ererben!

5:5 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5:6 Selig sind, die nach der Gerechtigkeit hungern und dürsten, denn sie werden gesättigt werden! –

5:6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.

5:7 Selig sind die Barmherzigen, denn sie werden Barmherzigkeit erlangen!

5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

5:8 Selig sind, die reinen Herzens sind, denn sie werden Gott schauen!

5:8 Blessed are the clean of heart: they shall see God.

5:9 Selig sind die Friedfertigen, denn sie werden Söhne Gottes heißen! –

5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

5:10 Selig sind, die um der Gerechtigkeit willen Verfolgung erleiden, denn ihnen wird das Himmelreich zuteil!

5:10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:11 Selig seid ihr, wenn man euch um meinetwillen schmäht und verfolgt und euch lügnerisch alles Böse nachredet!

5:11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:

5:12 Freuet euch darüber und jubelt, denn euer Lohn ist groß im Himmel! Ebenso hat man ja auch die Propheten vor euch verfolgt.«

5:12 Be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.

5:13 »Ihr seid das Salz der Erde! Wenn aber das Salz fade geworden ist, womit soll es wieder gesalzen werden? Es taugt zu nichts mehr, als aus dem Hause geworfen und von den Leuten zertreten zu werden. –

5:13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing anymore but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

5:14 Ihr seid das Licht der Welt! Eine Stadt, die oben auf einem Berge liegt, kann nicht verborgen bleiben.

5:14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.

5:15 Man zündet auch nicht ein Licht an und stellt es unter den Scheffel, sondern auf den Leuchter: dann leuchtet es allen, die im Hause sind.

5:15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.

5:16 Ebenso soll auch euer Licht vor den Menschen leuchten, damit sie eure guten Werke sehen und euren Vater, der im Himmel ist, preisen.«

5:16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

5:17 »Denkt nicht, daß ich gekommen sei, das Gesetz oder die Propheten aufzulösen! Ich bin nicht gekommen aufzulösen, sondern zu erfüllen.

5:17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

5:18 Denn wahrlich ich sage euch: Bis Himmel und Erde vergehen, wird vom Gesetz nicht ein einziges Jota und kein Strichlein vergehen, bis alles in Erfüllung gegangen ist.

5:18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.

5:19 Wer also ein einziges von diesen Geboten – und wäre es das geringste – auflöst und die Menschen demgemäß lehrt, der wird der Geringste im Himmelreich heißen; wer sie aber tut und (die Menschen) so lehrt, der wird groß im Himmelreich heißen.

5:19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

5:20 Denn ich sage euch: Wenn es mit eurer Gerechtigkeit nicht weit besser bestellt ist als bei den Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäern, so werdet ihr nimmermehr ins Himmelreich eingehen!«

5:20 For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

5:21 »Ihr habt gehört, daß den Alten geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht töten‹, wer aber tötet, soll dem Gericht verfallen sein.

5:21 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill, shall be in danger of the judgment.

5:22 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer seinem Bruder auch nur zürnt, der soll dem Gericht verfallen sein; und wer zu seinem Bruder ›Dummkopf‹ sagt, soll dem Hohen Rat verfallen sein; und wer ›du Narr‹ zu ihm sagt, soll der Feuerhölle verfallen sein.

5:22 But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

5:23 Wenn du also deine Opfergabe zum Altar bringst und dich dort erinnerst, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich hat,

5:23 If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath anything against thee;

5:24 so laß deine Gabe dort vor dem Altar und gehe zunächst hin und versöhne dich mit deinem Bruder; alsdann geh hin und opfere deine Gabe!

5:24 Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother, and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.

5:25 Sei zum Vergleich mit deinem Widersacher ohne Säumen bereit, solange du mit ihm noch auf dem Wege (zum Richter) bist, damit dein Widersacher dich nicht dem Richter übergibt und der Richter dich dem Gerichtsdiener (überantwortet) und du ins Gefängnis gesetzt wirst.

5:25 Be at agreement with thy adversary betimes, whilst thou art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

5:26 Wahrlich ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort sicherlich nicht herauskommen, bis du den letzten Pfennig bezahlt hast.

5:26 Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing.

5:27 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht ehebrechen!‹

5:27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery.

5:28 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer eine Ehefrau auch nur mit Begehrlichkeit anblickt, hat damit schon in seinem Herzen Ehebruch an ihr begangen.

5:28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

5:29 Wenn dich also dein rechtes Auge ärgert, so reiß es aus und wirf es weg von dir; denn es ist besser für dich, daß eines deiner Glieder (dir) verloren geht, als daß dein ganzer Leib in die Hölle geworfen wird.

5:29 And if thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than thy whole body be cast into hell.

5:30 Und wenn deine rechte Hand dich ärgert, so haue sie ab und wirf sie weg von dir; denn es ist besser für dich, daß eines deiner Glieder (dir) verloren geht, als daß dein ganzer Leib in die Hölle geworfen wird. –

5:30 And if thy right hand scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body go into hell.

5:31 Ferner ist (zu den Alten) gesagt worden: ›Wer seine Ehefrau entläßt, der soll ihr einen Scheidebrief geben!‹

5:31 And it hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.

5:32 Ich dagegen sage euch: Wer sich von seiner Frau scheidet – außer auf Grund von Unzucht –, der verschuldet es, daß dann Ehebruch mit ihr verübt wird; und wer eine entlassene Frau heiratet, der begeht Ehebruch.

5:32 But I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, excepting the cause of fornication, maketh her to commit adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.

5:33 Ihr habt weiter gehört, daß den Alten geboten worden ist: ›Du sollst nicht falsch schwören‹, ›sollst aber dem Herrn deine Eide erfüllen!‹

5:33 Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, thou shalt not forswear thyself: but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord.

5:34 Ich dagegen sage euch: Ihr sollt überhaupt nicht schwören, weder beim Himmel, denn er ist Gottes Thron,

5:34 But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven for it is the throne of God:

5:35 noch bei der Erde, denn sie ist der Schemel seiner Füße, noch bei Jerusalem, denn es ist die Stadt des großen Königs.

5:35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king:

5:36 Auch bei deinem Haupte sollst du nicht schwören, denn du vermagst kein einziges Haar weiß oder schwarz zu machen.

5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

5:37 Eure Rede sei vielmehr ›ja ja – nein nein‹; jeder weitere Zusatz ist vom Übel.

5:37 But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

5:38 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist: ›Auge um Auge und Zahn um Zahn!‹

5:38 You have heard that it hath been said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

5:39 Ich dagegen sage euch: Ihr sollt dem Bösen keinen Widerstand leisten; sondern wer dich auf die rechte Wange schlägt, dem halte auch die andere hin,

5:39 But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:

5:40 und wer mit dir einen Rechtsstreit anfangen und dir den Rock nehmen will, dem überlaß auch noch den Mantel,

5:40 And if a man will contend with thee in judgment, and take away thy coat, let go thy cloak also unto him.

5:41 und wer dich zu einer Meile Weges nötigt, mit dem gehe zwei.

5:41 And whosoever will force thee one mile, go with him other two.

5:42 Wer dich (um etwas) bittet, dem gib, und wer (Geld) von dir borgen will, den weise nicht ab!

5:42 Give to him that asketh of thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.

5:43 Ihr habt gehört, daß (den Alten) geboten worden ist; ›Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben, und deinen Feind hassen!‹

5:43 You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemy.

5:44 Ich dagegen sage euch: Liebet eure Feinde und betet für eure Verfolger,

5:44 But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:

5:45 damit ihr euch als Söhne eures himmlischen Vaters erweist. Denn er läßt seine Sonne über Böse und Gute aufgehen und läßt regnen auf Gerechte und Ungerechte.

5:45 That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust.

5:46 Denn wenn ihr (nur) die liebt, die euch lieben, welches Verdienst habt ihr da? Tun das nicht auch die Zöllner?

5:46 For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? do not even the publicans this?

5:47 Und wenn ihr nur eure Freunde grüßt, was tut ihr da Besonderes? Tun das nicht auch die Heiden?

5:47 And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? do not also the heathens this?

5:48 Darum sollt ihr vollkommen sein, wie euer himmlischer Vater vollkommen ist.«

5:48 Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.
