14:1 Darauf sagte Judith zu ihnen: Hört mich an, meine Brüder! Nehmt diesen Kopf und hängt ihn an die Brustwehr eurer Mauer.

14:1 And Judith said to all the people: Hear me, my brethren, hang ye up this head upon our walls.

14:2 Und wenn der Morgen anbricht und die Sonne über der Erde aufgeht, so nehmt allesamt eure Kriegswaffen und zieht, alle kriegstüchtigen Männer, aus der Stadt hinaus; setzt einen Anführer über sie, als ob ihr in die Ebene gegen die Vorhut der Assyrer hinabziehen wolltet. Doch ihr braucht nicht hinabzuziehen,

14:2 And as soon as the sun shall rise, let every man take his arms, and rush ye out, not as going down beneath, but as making an assault.

14:3 denn jene werden ihre Waffen ergreifen und in ihr Lager abmarschieren; dort werden sie die Feldherren des assyrischen Heeres wecken und zum Zelte des Holofernes laufen, ihn aber nicht finden; infolge davon werden sie erschrecken und die Flucht vor euch ergreifen.

14:3 Then the watchmen must needs run to awake their prince for the battle.

14:4 Dann verfolgt ihr sie im Verein mit allen Bewohnern des Landes Israel und haut sie auf allen Wegen nieder.

14:4 And when the captains of them shall run to the tent of Holofernes, and shall find him without his head wallowing in his blood, fear shall fall upon them.

14:5 Bevor ihr aber dieses tut, ruft mir den Ammoniter Achjor; er soll den Mann sehen und erkennen, der das Haus Israel verachtet und ihn selbst zu uns als zum Tode geschickt hat».

14:5 And when you shall know that they are fleeing, go after them securely, for the Lord will destroy them under your feet.

14:6 Man rief also den Achjor aus dem Hause des Ozias. Als er kam und den Kopf des Holofernes in der Hand eines Mannes unter dem versammelten Volke sah, fiel er vornüber zu Boden und verlor die Besinnung.

14:6 Then Achior seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, leaving the religion of the Gentiles, he believed God, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the people of Israel, with all the succession of his kindred until this present day.

14:7 Als man ihn dann aufhob, warf er sich vor Judith nieder, bezeigte ihr seine Huldigung und rief aus: »Gepriesen seist du in allen Hütten Israels und unter allen Völkern, welche erschrecken werden, wenn sie deinen Namen hören.

14:7 And immediately at break of day, they hung up the head of Holofernes upon the walls, and every man took his arms, and they went out with a great noise and shouting.

14:8 Und nun erzähle mir doch alles, was du in diesen Tagen getan hast«. Da erzählte ihm Judith, mitten unter dem Volke stehend, alles was sie getan hatte seit dem Tage ihres Weggangs bis jetzt, wo sie mit ihnen redete.

14:8 And the watchmen seeing this, ran to the tent of Holofernes.

14:9 Als sie ihren Bericht beendet hatte, brach das Volk in lauten Jubel aus und ließ ein Freudengeschrei in der ganzen Stadt erschallen.

14:9 And they that were in the tent came, and made a noise, before the door of the chamber to awake him, endeavouring by art to break his rest, that Holofernes might awake, not by their calling him, but by their noise.

14:10 Als Achjor aber alles sah, was der Gott Israels vollbracht hatte, glaubte er fest an diesen Gott; er ließ sich beschneiden und wurde in das Haus Israel aufgenommen bis auf diesen Tag.

14:10 For no man durst knock, or open and go into the chamber of the general of the Assyrians.

14:11 Als nun der Morgen anbrach, hängten sie den Kopf des Holofernes an die Mauer, ergriffen dann Mann für Mann ihre Waffen und zogen in Scharen nach den Zugängen zum Berge.

14:11 But when his captains and tribunes were come, and all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:

14:12 Als die Assyrer sie erblickten, schickten sie Boten an ihre Anführer; diese begaben sich zu den Feldherren und Obersten und zu allen ihren Hauptleuten.

14:12 Go in, and awake him, for the mice, coming out of their holes, have presumed to challenge us to fight.

14:13 Die verfügten sich zum Zelte des Holofernes und sagten zu dem Hausmarschall: »Wecke doch unsern Herrn, denn das Knechtsgesindel wagt es zum Kampfe mit uns herabzukommen, um völlig vernichtet zu werden«.

14:13 Then Vagao going into his chamber, stood before the curtain, and made a clapping with his hands: for he thought that he was sleeping with Judith.

14:14 Bagoas ging also hinein und klopfte am Vorhang des Zeltes; er nahm nämlich an, Holofernes schlafe bei der Judith.

14:14 But when with hearkening, he perceived no motion of one lying, he came near to the curtain, and lifting it up, and seeing the body of Holofernes, lying upon the ground, without the head, weltering in his blood, he cried out with a loud voice, with weeping, and rent his garments.

14:15 Da aber niemand sich hören ließ, schob er den Vorhang zurück, trat in das Schlafgemach und fand ihn tot am Fußschemel hingestreckt daliegend mit abgehauenem Kopfe.

14:15 And he went into the tent of Judith, and not finding her, he ran out to the people,

14:16 Da erhob er ein lautes Geschrei mit Weinen und Wehklagen und Geheul und zerriß seine Kleider.

14:16 And said: One Hebrew woman hath made confusion in the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground, and his head is not upon him.

14:17 Dann eilte er in das Zelt, wo Judith gewohnt hatte, und als er sie dort nicht fand, stürzte er unter das Kriegsvolk hinaus und schrie:

14:17 Now when the chiefs of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all rent their garments, and an intolerable fear and dread fell upon them, and their minds were troubled exceedingly.

14:18 »Dieses Knechtsgesindel hat Verrat geübt! Ein einziges hebräisches Weib hat Schande über das Haus des Königs Nabuchodonosor gebracht! Ach, da liegt Holofernes am Boden ohne Kopf!«

14:18 And there was a very great cry in the midst of their camp.

14:19 Als die Anführer des assyrischen Heeres diese Worte vernahmen, zerrissen sie ihre Kleider und waren ganz fassungslos; Wehklagen und lautes Geschrei erscholl von ihnen inmitten des Lagers.
